Participatory project management

In some projects, and especially in those that involve highly qualified people, it is often useful and necessary to involve the various project members in the definition of project objectives, working methods, action planning, as well as problem solving.  This we call participatory project management.

Involving project participants can be done by using the techniques of group facilitation. As a result the project manager can expect a higher staff motivation, a better use of the available knowledge and competences, a climate of trust as well as more robust solutions (as they have been co-constructed).

Key elements of participatory project management are:
  • Agreement on project objectives and success indicators
  • Participatory diagnostic of the situation
  • Joint problem resolution
  • Participatory action planning
  • Test of the robustness of this plan among project participants
  • Implementation
  • Project review for joint learning
