In participatory as in other projects it is essential to have indicators signaling how the work is proceeding and to what extent results are being reached. In the literature on participation processes (see our publications) such indicators have been provided. However, it is equally and possibly even more important that indicators be developed with those responsible for the project and also with the stakeholders involved. In other words, the evaluation of a participatory project could and possibly should contribute to the participatory nature of the project. In this way the evaluation can generate important learning during the project allowing the latter to adapt to new challenges and developments. This kind of interactive evaluation also tends to produce profound lessons learned at the end of the project.
Objectives - Measure the quality of the process
- Check the reaching objectives
- Provide a common basis for continually improving and adjusting the ongoing work
- Instill an atmosphere of learning
MethodsFrom the literature and our own experience, we have derived a number of relevant indicators. However, we also consider it essential to involve the project decision makers and other stakeholders in the drawing up of relevant indicators. In terms of data analysis we use project documents, surveys, informal interviews, but also facilitated focus groups and project meetings to receive input on possible indicators. |
