Role-playing games

Role playing games allow to anticipate and simulate difficult situations and – with a group opf stakeholders – explore possible solutions. In a role playing game participants are thus put into a virtual situation where they find out about the systemic nature of things (for example the relationships between water resources and various stakeholder interests), how the situation is likely to develop if certain actions are taken (scenarios), and eventually how possible decisions should be taken.

Role playing games can take different forms – for example they can be based on a visual representation of the territory or just on the understanding of certain roles that stakeholders usually play in a given context.

Objectives

  • Place a stakeholder group into a virtual decision-making situation.
  • Explore scenarios of how the situation may develop.
  • Foresee crisis situations
  • Test and evaluate different solutions

Role playing games allow participants to learn by experimentation. These tools facilitate also the addressing of sensitive questions as participants are more easily ready to put difficult issues on the table in a virtual world. This world then also offers the possibility to test more creative potential solutions as less constraints than in the real world exist. Role plays offer also the option for a group of stakeholders to place themselves into the role of another stakeholder group (and vice versa) and thus increase mutual understanding. Developing scenarios allows to anticipate and to prepare for potential future developments.
